HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao cut short his stay in Italy and canceled his attendance at this week's Group of Eight leaders' summit due to violence in China's Xinjiang region, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.
On Hu's behalf, State Councilor Dai Bingguo will attend the summit in the central Italian city of L'Aquila, the Chinese report said.
Senior Chinese officials including Commerce Minister Chen Deming and National Development and Reform Commission Chairman Zhang Ping will attend the meeting as planned, Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing a Chinese Foreign Ministry official Wednesday.
