Words change meaning across town and across generations. In
1970 a soldier returning from Vietnam who told his family that he got a
job would find all sorts of young women willing to marry him because he
made enough money to support a family. Not so today. Or a young woman
graduating from college in 1970 who got a job could have helped parents
if they got sick and could not work.Today’s college graduate has to
qualify the statement ‘I got a job ‘ with words like part time or full
time and just how near the minimum wage they are. Words like health
benefits do not come up for discussion for most jobs held by recent
college graduates.
The average 2011 college graduate had $25,000 in student debt and
$3,500 in credit card loans at graduation. At 10% interest the minimum
interest only payment on the average student debt would be $3,500 a year
and at 30% that credit card debt would cost $1,500 if you couldn’t
afford to make payments of the principal. That is difficult to do when
the average salary of those college grads has declined from $30,000 to
$27,000 a year before taxes. After federal and state income taxes that
is lucky to take home $12.25 an hour so those student loans and credit
card bills are really depressing.
Our most recent jobs report noted that the number of people with
multiple part time jobs with zero benefits is surging. Also surging is
the number of Americans who are not even in the labor force. That figure
stands at 36% today and will doubtless be higher tomorrow. The federal
government regards part time employment working Saturdays as a job so
they can keep the illusion of an unemployment rate below 8% in the
media. And since 1970 our wages have declined 40% after taxes and after
deflating for higher prices. This is according to then professor and now
Senator Elizabeth Warren. If you discount for lower mortgage costs, it
is game over for the middle class. If a rambunctious activist, were to
subtract the cost of a mandatory Obamacare minimum fee for health
insurance on a recent college grad with three near minimum wage jobs, we
would know the truth; We can’t afford to live here anymore which I
believe is by design. Do you want proof?
The employment rate has fallen below 59% and stayed there for four
years. The employment rate even in terms of quantity and not the more
strict terms of quality is worse than at any time since the Great
Depression.
After tax disposable income if you discount for inflation had the largest monthly decline in January over the past 50 years.
The US Census Bureau reports that 146 million Americans are either
near the poverty line, at it or below. You are aware that the American
government lies about the cost of living by omitting the price of food
and fuel from the cost of living. But did you know that the Census
Bureau keeps the poverty line unrealistically low by using health care
costs from the early 1950s? Fans of old movies like myself have heard
lines like the following: a boss complaining that it costs him $20 a day
keep a worker in Intensive Care in a Los Angeles hospital. So just how
realistic is it for the Census to define a man with two part time jobs
as being above the poverty line if they are assuming he can get a room
in an ICU for $20 a day in Los Angeles?
Planned Obsolescence; A chemist said he had bought a blender 22
years ago that lasted 20 years. He replaced it two years ago. The
new blender failed after just two years. He asked us what is the real
replacement cost of his blender? He thinks the new one is 20 times the
old one which is no longer available. The point here for what used to be
the middle class was also made by Richard Russel. When he was a boy
during the Great Depression, he did not notice changes immediately.
After a year he noticed that people’s shoes were wearing out and not
being replaced. Now fast forward to today’s planned obsolescent
society. If you are a middle class person with declining real wages, or
a young underemployed graduate or a pensioner, you absolutely cannot
afford to replace all of your household goods every two or three years.
Of course the same is happening to America’s infrastructure. I read
quite often of bridges collapsing. Levees are rated near collapse and
nothing is done to save hundreds of thousands of people from potentially
catastrophic losses. America’s debt is nearly 17 trillion dollars. More
than $21 trillion if you count state and local debt. More than 25
trillion if you count Government Sponsored loan guarantees like to
Fannie Mae and Sallie Mae. And, if you add in the infrastructure repairs
which will have to be paid for sooner rather than later, you are
approaching 30 trillion dollars.
Instead of letting a politician confuse the issue we could just
define the word job as one that produces enough after tax income to
support a family in a safe neighborhood. I have taken the liberty to add
the concept of safety to housing because a politician can give you an
unrealistic low ball housing cost estimate by including areas that No
Sane Person would say their children can safely walk home from school.
The federal government has admitted in court documents to taking
planes filled with 5.5 tons of illegal drugs per flight into America.
They distribute drugs to those street gangs who have 1.4 million
members, The Federal government sells weapons to these same gangs inside
the US and not just to gangs in Mexico. This has made large area of
America uninhabitable for middle class people. What you might not
realize is that they want your children to be beaten up at school,
terrorized and even raped. The latter refers to boys as well as girls.
This has forced families to pay exorbitant amounts of money for a house.
Before I left Silicon Valley a relative’s neighbor had bought a home
with a $7,000 a month mortgage payment. This was not a fancy home. The
fence was falling down. They had $20,000 in repair work for the roof and
plumbing which easily could have been more. Obviously, both parents
worked. My relative had to take over some toys for their daughter who
was three year-old and had none. I met a woman with a beautiful 11
year-old girl who had to move to Cupertino to protect her daughter from
persistent and serious rape threats as she was white in a majority
immigrant neighborhood. $900,000 was the price she had to pay to protect
her children.
Compare that to the 1960s when $25.000 homes with 3 bedroom had
affordable payments of $129 a month. But that was before the federal
government thought it was a good idea to double the population of
California.
A quick online check found a few major companies currently willing to
pay $15.00 an hour to experienced warehouse workers who must be strong
and in good health. I found lots of rooms to rent ranging from $600 a
month to $900 ranging from 100 square feet and up. That is for the room.
Figure another $100 for utilities. Your monthly bus pass is only $70.
Forget about a car. California registration fess and taxes plus
insurance and that mandatory smog check will kill your budget. Your
monthly budget is already close to $800 before you get to buy food and
clothes. Obviously, the working class will not ever be making enough to
get married. And they can forget about having even one child. This might
lead us to falsely conclude they like immigrants. We already know that
their Foundation studies tell us the global elite plans to reduce the
total population of the world to a billion or fewer people so they must
like any of us at all.
The times are a changing. The ruling class has decided that the future does not include you no matter what race you are.
