Around 90 workers on the Gullfaks C oil platform in the North Sea were evacuated late Thursday evening, following a sudden pressure change during the drilling of a new well, TV 2 reports.
It was discovered that there was a fault on one of two valves, designed to prevent a blow-out.
- The situation on the platform is secure, and there are no leaks from the well. Work is underway to stabilize the pressure, and we have evacuated personnel not engaged in the ongoing work, says Statoil press spokesman Gisle Johanson to TV 2 News.
140 persons are still at work on the platform, trying to bring the situation back to normal.
Johanson admits to newspaper Aftenposten that the drilling of the new well has been demanding, with several unforeseen pressure changes.
Statoil was unable to say when the platform would be back to normal operations.
