I've previously written that real men stand up to fascists:

The fascists' view of masculinity is that -- to be a real American man -- you have to rally around the "strong leader", you have to talk tough about the "war on terror", you have to get pleasure out of watching "our team" (the sole superpower) beat the stuffing out of a bunch of third-rate armies like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Are they right? Well, psychologists tell us that rallying around the authoritarian leader is actually a very infantile way to affirm one's masculinity.

Okay, listen up guys. Real men don't bluster like George W. Bush or Bill O'Reilly. Real men stand up to fascists.

Our forefathers stood up to the British king and fought for our freedom. Our forefathers stood up to tyrants and won their liberty and freedom.

THAT's what masculinity really means. That's where the pedal hits the metal and the rubber meets the road. It is the dictators running our country who are the danger, who are stealing the future from us, and our kids, and our grandkids.

Come on, buddy . . . stop posing. And start acting like a real man.

Susan B. Anthony - one of the leading crusaders for women's rights - said at her sentencing hearing based on her conviction for illegally voting:

I shall earnestly and persistently continue to urge all women to the practical recognition of the old revolutionary maxim, that "Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God."

Nor is the idea strictly a Christian idea.

The Book of Maccabees - an ancient secular Jewish book purporting to document the events which Chanukah celebrates - is said to contain the same statement.

US panel lashes out at China

The annual report on US-China economic and security review commission recommends tougher stance against China.

In a much-anticipated report, the US-China Economic and Security Review commission has accused Beijing of deceptive economic practises, effectively reigniting the two countries' spat over currency and trade issues. Presenting its findings to the US Congress, the congressional advisory panel has recommended the Obama administration to take tougher actions against what it calls China's policy of keeping its currency undervalued. On Wednesday, the commission said that China is creating global imbalances and using "market access-limiting practises" that fall outside its World Trade Organisation commitments. The report added that the Chinese government wants its yuan currency to serve as a more international currency, and that it has continued buying up US debt and has become the single biggest foreign buyer of treasury securities. "Although the size of China's holdings has raised concerns about the degree of influence China has on the US economy, the lack of alternatives and the potential detrimental impacts on China's economy make it unlikely that China would stop buying US debt or liquidate its holdings altogether," the report said. Not a military threat Daniel Slane, the chairman of the US-China review commission responsible for the report told Al Jazeera: "We should try to structure a long term currency re-evaluation and be sensitive to the Chinese issue of not creating instability, we can't expect them to change their currency dramatically over night without creating any problems." On China's military build-up and the possible threat to the US he said: "What is happening is that the Chinese are modernising their military. "They have developed missiles that can reach our bases in the far east, that is some concern for the defence department. "They [the Chinese] have also developed an anti-ship missile that can hit a moving ship a thousand miles off their coast, we believe that more can be done to counter this threat and that is something the defense department is working on. "We have some hope that in the next five year plan which will come out in the spring we will talk about switching from an export driven economy to a domestic consumption economy and opening up their market to US export," slane said. Beijing has repeatedly rejected US accusations that its currency is undervalued, and it contends that a stronger yuan will not ease the US trade deficit. Chinese officials say globalisation of production also has contributed to trade imbalances and the US must solve its problems of unemployment, overspending and low savings.

No Plans In Senate For A Vote On Unemployment Benefits

Senate Democrats have not figured out a way to get around Republican opposition to reauthorizing extended unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless.

"We are still in the process of trying to establish the schedule of the lame duck session, in terms of the remaining days of the session, so no specifics, but think we all understand that this is something that is going to have to be done," said Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

The benefits are set to expire at the end of the month, jeopardizing a lifeline for two million people during the holidays. But it's not likely the benefits will be reauthorized before they lapse, since Congress will go home for Thanksgiving next week, meaning this week is the last chance to prevent an interruption in benefits. Reed said there is no plan for a vote.

"At this point it's not been scheduled," he said. "We're trying to make a case that there be action but at this point I can't point to a specific time it will come up for a vote this week."

Extended unemployment insurance is federally-funded and gives the long-term unemployed up to 73 weeks of payments after they finish 26 weeks of state benefits. Previous reauthorizations have been held up because Republicans and conservative Democrats don't want the cost of the benefits added to the deficit, even though extended benefits have traditionally been given "emergency" status and financed with deficit spending. (A full-year reauthorization might cost $65 billion, according to the Economic Policy Institute). Democrats have been highlighting the fact that the people insisting on offsets for unemployment benefits are not insisting on offsets for tax cuts for the rich.

"On the one hand they want to provide $700 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans but not pay for them. And on the other hand they're demanding that UI benefits for the middle class be paid for," Reed said. "That's a little like someone on a diet who orders a Diet Coke and a Big Mac simultaneously."

Starting Dec. 1, people who exhaust state benefits or one of the four "tiers" of Emergency Unemployment Compensation will be ineligible for another tier or for Extended Benefits. HuffPost readers: Are you in this boat? Tell us about it -- email arthur@huffingtonpost.com.

Pat McNamara, 61, said she lost her job with the Philadelphia mayor's office in August 2009. She's been unable to find work. "I am not proud. I have applied for everything from administrative positions to temp jobs, even customer service jobs paying $7.50 an hour with no benefits," she said. "It's going to be tough when federal unemployment benefits end. I have no other source of income."

Reed and Sen. Robert Casey (D-Pa.) said they didn't know whether Democrats would attempt a deal to attach the benefits to the tax cuts, but both said they wanted the benefits reauthorized for a full year. Democrats will need at least a handful of Republicans, but moderates who previously crossed the aisle for the unemployed have not signaled they will do so this time. Reed said Senate Democrats are focused for now on reauthorizing current benefits and not giving additional weeks to people who have already exhausted their federal benefits.

On Wednesday the National Employment Law Project delivered a petition with 100,000 signatures to Casey's office calling on the Senate to reauthorize the benefits.

The previous lapse lasted for 50 days, interrupting benefits for 2.5 million people. Those folks were eventually given retroactive lump-sum payments.

China unveils jet to rival Boeing and Airbus

BEIJING, November 16 - China has unveiled its first large domestically produced passenger jet, which aims to compete with Airbus and Boeing in the global aviation market, state media reported Tuesday.

The C919 prototype made its debut at an aviation exhibition in the southern province of Guangdong, and three major state-owned airlines were due to sign deals to buy the planes on Tuesday, the official China Daily said.

The report did not disclose the names of the customers, but China's three main state-owned carriers are Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern.

The aircraft will take to the air at the show being held in the city of Zhuhai, it said.

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the plane's manufacturer, has forecast demand for C919s in the domestic and overseas markets to hit 2,000, the report quoted COMAC vice president Wu Guanghui as saying.

The single-aisle jet, which seats between 168 and 190 passengers, is due to make a trial flight in 2014 and be delivered to clients in 2016. It is seen as a potential competitor to the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737.

It is part of China's plan to break the duopoly of Airbus and Boeing in the production of large commercial aircraft, and could dampen prospects for the two industry giants in what will soon become the world's biggest aviation market.

Air traffic in China, which has doubled in the past decade, is again expected to double by 2020, with the number of airports growing from 160 to 240, according to forecasts drawn up by Airbus.

The head of China's civil aviation administration said last month that the country would have up to 5,000 aircraft to transport passengers and cargo by 2015, state media reported.
