Greenland turns its back on austerity

While other European governments are tightening their belts, Greenland’s new leaders are trying to spend their way out of recession
Hammond: Bye-bye austerity. Hello prosperity (Photo:Scanpix)
For the first time in five years, Greenland’s new government, led by recently elected Aleqa Hammond’s Siumut party, has presented the country a budget awash in red ink. By presenting a 6.5 billion kroner 2014 budget that runs a 76 million kroner deficit, the social-democratic party hopes to spend Greenland back to prosperity by building port facilities, colleges and investing in education.
But that move has been met with intense criticism from the country’s main opposition party, Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA).
While serving as premier of the self-governing Danish territory from 2009 until 2013, IA leader Kuupik Kleist practised tight-fisted, budget-balancing fiscal policies. The leftist party maintains that the country’s economic footing is still far too shaky to start a spending spree.
IA leaders said the fishing industry, the backbone of Greenland’s economy, is ailing and that the country’s much ballyhooed future as an oil and mineral Klondike remains cloudy at best.
"They have fallen in love with their own campaign rhetoric instead of making efforts to improve the economy,” finance committee member Naaja Nathanielsen (IA) told Politiken newspaper. “We need to find one billion kroner each year until 2030 to fund our welfare system and there is no guarantee that those funds will come from mining or oil.”
Finance minister Vittus Qujaukitsoq (Siumut) disagreed and said the country was strong enough to withstand a little red ink.
"This is a conscious choice to pursue an employment policy," he told Poliiken.
But even though he said the new government intends to pursue “less rigid” fiscal policies than the previous one, he agreed Greenland needed to find new revenue sources.
"The best opportunities are undoubtedly in the raw materials," Qujaukitsoq said.
The Greenland government has in recent months pinned much of its financial hopes on a major iron mine near the capital city of Nuuk, but Qujaukitsoq stressed that the venture remained uncertain because the funding is not in place.

The Man Who Changed Iceland – A Message For The US and Greece

Joe Martino
Activist Post

The man who forced the government of Iceland to resign, and removed the IMF representatives from his country, Hörður Torfason, is now teaching meta-modern democracy throughout Europe. The rest of the world would benefit from following the example set by Iceland: Arresting the corrupt bankers who are responsible for the current economic turmoil.

Iceland’s president explained how his country recovered so quickly from the recession: “The government bailed out the people and imprisoned the banksters — the opposite of what America and the rest of Europe did.”

The true measure of the leader is not how many followers he has, but how many leaders he creates. The general public hasn’t been educated to see beyond the social stereotypes to understand that those in highest levels of power today do not have humanity's best interests at heart.

Control Your Money or Your Money Will Control You

Change your attitude toward debt. Every time you use credit for a purchase think, “Debt is slavery; I am making myself a slave.”

Manipulators rarely advise you to seek new and diverse information or to ‘learn and research for yourself,’ it tends to be safer for exploitative and irresponsible leaders to keep their citizens in the dark; in their view less independent thought is better. Independent thought leads to an inquiring mind, a mindset that eventually leads to the questioning of authority figures, and that is the one thing that inadequate leaders do not want.

Governments have never existed to solve problems domestic or international. Governments and their institutions exist merely to further and secure the interests of favoured groups, but We the People are never the favoured group.

5 Companies That Make Money By Keeping Americans Terrified of Terror Attacks

A massive industry profits off the government-induced fear of terrorism.

Michael Hayden, the former director of the National Security Agency, has  invaded America’s television sets in recent weeks to warn about Edward Snowden’s leaks and the continuing terrorist threat to America.
But what often goes unmentioned, as the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald pointed out, is that Hayden has a financial stake in keeping Americans scared and on a permanent war footing against Islamist militants.
And the private firm he works for, called the Chertoff Group, is not the only one making money by scaring Americans.
Post-9/11 America has witnessed a boom in private firms dedicated to the hyped-up threat of terrorism. The drive to privatize America's national security apparatus accelerated in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, and it’s gotten to the point where 70 percent of the national intelligence budget is now spent on private contractors, as  author Tim Shorrock reported. The private intelligence contractors have profited to the tune of at least $6 billion a year. In 2010,  the Washington Post revealed that there are 1,931 private firms across the country dedicated to fighting terrorism.
What it all adds up to is a massive industry profiting off government-induced fear of terrorism, even though Americans are more likely to be killed by a car crash or their own furniture than a terror attack.
Here are five private companies cashing in on keeping you afraid.
1. The Chertoff Group
On August 11, former NSA head Michael Hayden, the man at the center of the Bush administration's 2005 surveillance scandal, was defending his former agency on CBS News in the wake of the latest NSA spying scandal. Commenting on President Obama's half-hearted promises to reform some NSA practices,  Hayden told host Bob Schieffer that “the President is trying to take some steps to make the American people more comfortable about what it is we're doing. That's going to be hard because, frankly, Bob, some steps to make Americans more comfortable will actually make Americans less safe.”
Former Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff had a similar message when he appeared on ABC News August 4. Speaking about the purported threat from an Al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen that led to the closure of 19 U.S. embassies,  Chertoff said that “the collection of this warning information [about Al Qaeda] came from the kinds of programs we've been discussing about, the ability to capture communications overseas.”
CBS and ABC did not see fit to inform viewers that both Hayden and Chertoff are employees of the Chertoff Group, a private firm created in 2009 that companies hire to consult on best practices for security and combatting terrorism. Some of the companies the firm advises go on to win government contracts. Chertoff is the founder and chairman of the group, while Hayden serves as a principal. So they profit off a war on terror they say is crucial to keeping Americans safe.
Though it's unclear how much in total exactly the firm makes, there are some known numbers. After the failed attempt in 2010 to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day with a bomb hidden in underwear, Chertoff pushed for better airport security procedures. One of the suggestions Chertoff made was for the Transportation Security Agency to use full-body scanners like the ones Rapiscan, one of the Chertoff Group's clients, made. And sure enough, after the Christmas Day plot, the TSA ordered 300 Rapiscan machines.  The Huffington Post reported that Rapiscan made $118 million from the government between 2009-2010.
2. Booz Allen Hamilton
This private intelligence contractor has become a household name in the wake of the NSA scandal. Edward Snowden, the man responsible for leaking secret documents that exposed the breadth of NSA surveillance, was working for Booz Allen when he downloaded the documents he handed off to media outlets. As the  New York Times reported in June, the company parlays its technology expertise for intelligence uses into massive government contracts. Thousands of employees of the company provide services to the NSA, like analyzing the massive amounts of data the government agency collects every day. The company is also the shining symbol of the government-private security complex's revolving door: its vice president is the former director of national intelligence, while the current director of national intelligence is a former employee of Booz Allen.

Oil soars to $110 a barrel Suez Canal fears, trigger to WW3?? RT
“Investors can’t ignore such a situation, as in the race for power the Suez Canal will be a weighty asset, the ownership of which will give a chance to one of the parties to come to terms with the outside. This is exactly the background against which oil prices are growing,” Aleksey Pukhaev wrote in an e-mail.
Traders are most concerned turmoil in Egypt could escalate to a level where protesters could feasibly disrupt oil and commodity shipping through the Suez Canal, situated about 125 kilometers east of Cairo.

Egypt Is Descending Into Civil War, But Don’t Expect Obama To Cancel His Golf Vacation
The largest Islamic nation in the Middle East is on the verge of descending into civil war, the Syrian civil war is starting to spill over into Lebanon, and the worst violence in five years has just hit Iraq, but Barack Obama is way too busy to be bothered with any of that.  Right now, Obama is enjoying one of the true loves of his life – golf.  According to the Washington Post, Obama has “played 18 holes of golf every day but one this week”, and without a doubt he appears to really be enjoying his time up in Martha’s Vineyard.  I hear that it is absolutely beautiful up there this time of the year.  And apparently he needs the rest.  After all, prior to this vacation he has only had time to play 133 rounds of golf since becoming president.  Between snubbing world leaders and getting the U.S. economy going again, it must be really tough for Obama to find enough time to sharpen his game.
Of course I am being facetious.  It is absolutely ridiculous how much time Obama takes off, and Congress is even worse.  Congress is taking a five week vacation right now.  Most Americans don’t get that much vacation in an entire year.
Meanwhile, as our leaders enjoy their rest, the Middle East is coming apart at the seams.
In Egypt, authorities say that 638 people are now confirmed deadand another 3,994 people were wounded in the nightmarish violence that erupted in Cairo this week.  Hundreds of bodies remain uncounted by the authorities, and it appears very likely that Egypt is rapidly heading down the path to full-blown civil war

Pound set to fall against dollar as Mark Carney continues stimulus

The pound will weaken substantially in the coming months as policy-makers affirm commitments to keep interest rates at record lows.

Morgan Stanley predicts that sterling will fall from a current value of around $1.56 to $1.48 in three months’ time – a 5pc fall – as Bank of England Governor Mark Carney continues to pursue measures to stimulate the economy.
A series of positive economic news has boosted the pound recently, sending it to eight-week highs against the dollar, but Morgan Stanley’s head of foreign exchange strategy Hans Redeker said significant slack remains in the economy and that Mr Carney may even pursue an expansion of the Bank’s £375bn quantitative easing programme.
The Bank plans to keep interest rates at a record low of 0.5pc until unemployment falls from its current 7.8pc to below 7pc.
“There is a substantial output gap in the UK, which will require several years of good economic performance to close,” Mr Redeker told Bloomberg.
“The Bank will make it clear pretty soon that it is focusing on the output gap.”
Mr Redeker warned that expectations for growth were unlikely to improve beyond current revisions.
“Given the amount of positive surprises so far, it’s unlikely that further data will add to current expectations,” he said
